The 21st century has witnessed exponential technological advances across all spheres of social life, especially in the field of education. In keeping with this growing trend, the Center of Excellence for Advanced E-learning at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) set out to launch a platform for publishing in-depth studies on all aspects of virtual learning across a wide range of disciplines.

In December 2015, the journal was renamed to Interdisciplinary Journal of Virtual Learning in Medical Sciences (IJVLMS), and since then it has served as a medium for sharing and promoting research findings on the latest trends and best practices in virtual learning and educational technologies. This peer-reviewed open access journal accepts Original Articles, Reviews, Special Reports, Brief Reports, Short Communications, News, Software Articles, Commentary and Letters to the Editor.
